Veiled Happiness

This article is inspired by a recent conversation the author had with someone.

The person told the author that they had recently undergone some spiritual "cleansing" and, after this, they felt really good. The person explained that they felt very happy for a few weeks after this "cleansing" happened, but now, it seems like they have lost this happiness again.

The author responded by reminding this person that happiness is their True Nature. Happiness never left them. Instead, they should look at what came and veiled their happy Nature.

The person seemed satisfied with this answer and agreed to investigate.

The Cause of Happiness

Let's consider the above-mentioned person's situation. Many of us may be able to relate.

We may recall feeling really good after a meditation or a spiritual retreat. We may recall times when we were simply happy for no reason. Yet, these moments, or these phases of happiness, seem to fade into the background, and we are faced again with stress, anger, and unhappiness of everyday life.

We may then believe that it was the retreat, a meditation, or a teacher that made us happy. Of course, we will want to repeat the retreat or meditation, or see the teacher again, hoping to get this happiness again.

While the retreat, meditation, or teacher may help us, we can consider that the retreat, meditation, or teacher is not the cause or the source of our happiness.

Separate self

See, it is as if our True Nature gets veiled by our worries and fears and guilt and stress. The illusion of a "separate self" veils our happiness. Imagine how the sun gets veiled by thick clouds or mist... the same happens to our happy Nature.

These "moments" of happiness come to us when we stop to identify as this limited, "separate self". When we don't associate with this limited, separate entity, there are no "self and others", and there are no concepts of "life and death" or "past and future".

With these illusions out of the way, our True Nature, which is always the Eternal Backdrop for the play of the "separate self", comes to the foreground. The veil is lifted.

Now, we embody our happy True Nature, knowingly.

Moment to Moment

If peace and happiness is our True Nature, then it means that we are never separate from peace and happiness. It means that true happiness is not a "moment", but a Presence in and through which life plays out.

We simply have to become aware of our peaceful, happy Nature, and acknowledge This.

Acknowledging and being aware of our peaceful, happy Nature does not imply that we will avoid facing challenges in life. It simply means that we will deal with life's challenges in a peaceful way. It means that our happiness will not be disturbed by hardships.

This does not necessarily mean that we will go through all life's challenges with a big smile on our face, but that we will be at peace in our hearts, and we will be content with what is unfolding for us.
