In this article, we will use words to point towards our inner Silence.
We will use a lot of "noise" to talk about "no noise". We will use many words to describe the "Wordless".
This is the paradox of this Silence.
The Silence we are about to acknowledge and explore, is not a quietness, or an absence of sound. It is not a mere nothingness. On the contrary.
Let's become aware of our inner Silence.
Let's explore our inner Silence.
An invitation
We can make this an inner investigation, or an exercise, and we can use the following text as a guide to our inner exploration. If it is the first time that we are doing such an investigation or exploration, then it is helpful to go into a quiet area where we will be undisturbed, with no distractions - in the privacy of our room or home, or in nature. Being patient and sincere is important for this exercise. Good concentration also helps.
So, we can sit quietly, relax our body, and simply breathe slowly and peacefully. We simply observe the pace of the breath, as it slows down and becomes deeper and calmer.
We keep observing our breath, and we will realize that we are also observing thoughts coming and going. We can observe these thoughts without engaging with them. We simply allow them to flow, and we shift our attention to the Silence in which these thoughts are playing off.
Qualities
As we keep checking up, we will realize that this Silence is not a mere stillness, but it is the space in which the thoughts are arising.Let's observe and acknowledge this...
Observing closely, we will see that this Silence has attributes and qualities.
First of all, this Silence has the quality of space. We just acknowledged that the Silence is also the space in which thoughts arise and dissolve. Right? And, this space is empty. It is because of its emptiness that objects can appear in and through it. This simultaneously means that this Silence is empty of lack, unhappiness, and suffering.
Secondly, we note that this Silence is aware. And through the quality of awareness, comes the quality of knowing. This Silence knows. Also, this Silence is present, so it has the quality of presence.
Thus, this Silence has the quality of boundless space, emptiness, awareness, knowing, and presence.
Now, let's confirm this, and let this be clear to us, without any doubt.
Introspection
After this confirmation, we can now sincerely check up and investigate the following. Is there any identity attached to this Silence? Does Silence identify itself in any way, or are identifications simply arising from this Silence?
And secondly, can we say that this Silence, is in any way, "two or more"? Are there many "silences" existing, or one Silence?
Does this Silence have a start and an end? Or is it whole, boundless, eternal, with phenomena simply appearing in and through it?
Is this Silence separate from ourselves, in any way? Can we see ourselves separate from this Silence? Can this Silence be an object to us?
Can we say that this Silence is ever absent? Is it possible that this Silence is always here, always present, and that thoughts, sensations, appearances, sounds, activity, and so on, spring forth from this Silence?
And lastly, can we say that we become this Silence through investigating and checking up? Or, are we already and always this Silence?
Let's consider...
After dissolving the many layers of our mind, we may realize it's Silent Source. |
